PSM I (Scrum.org) vs CSM (Scrum Alliance)
PSM I and CSM are the two leading entry-level Scrum Master certifications. PSM I is offered by Scrum.org (founded by Ken Schwaber, co-creator of Scrum), while CSM is offered by Scrum Alliance (founded by Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber). Both validate your understanding of Scrum, but they differ in exam difficulty, cost, and industry perception.
| Criterion | PSM I (Scrum.org) | CSM (Scrum Alliance) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam Difficulty | Harder — 80 questions, 85% pass score | Easier — 50 questions, 74% pass score |
| Cost | $200 (exam only, no course required) | $150–$1,000 (mandatory 2-day course) |
| Course Required | No — self-study is sufficient | Yes — must attend a certified trainer's course |
| Retakes | Free retakes, no time limit | 2 free retakes within 60 days |
| Recognition | Growing — seen as more rigorous | Established — most widely recognized Scrum cert |
| Renewal | None — lifetime certification | 20 SEUs + $100 every 2 years |
The Verdict
If you're confident in your Scrum knowledge and want a cost-effective, no-renewal certification, PSM I is the better choice. If you prefer structured training or your employer specifically requires CSM, go with Scrum Alliance. Both are respected, but PSM I is increasingly seen as the more rigorous credential.
