Weld Preheat & PWHT Carbon Equivalent Calculator

CE per AWS D1.1 / ASME Section IX

Why Preheat Matters

Preheating slows the cooling rate in the HAZ, allowing dissolved hydrogen to escape and preventing the formation of hard, brittle martensite. This is critical for steels with CE > 0.40, which are susceptible to hydrogen-induced cold cracking (HICC).

Code References

AWS D1.1 Clause 5.7 provides preheat requirements based on steel grade and thickness. ASME Section IX requires preheat ranges to be specified in the WPS. Client specifications (Aramco SAES-W-011, ADNOC AGES) may impose stricter requirements.
