PMP Domains Explained: People, Process, and Business Environment
The PMP exam is built on three domains defined in the Exam Content Outline (ECO). Understanding what each covers — and how to study it — is the foundation of an effective prep strategy.
Domain 1: People (42%)
The People domain is the largest section by weight and reflects PMI's emphasis on leadership. If you're a technical project manager who under-invests here, you'll struggle.
What It Covers
- Conflict management and resolution
- Leading and building teams
- Stakeholder engagement and communication
- Servant leadership and mentoring
- Virtual and hybrid team management
- Negotiation and motivation
- Empowering team members
How to Study It
- Focus on soft skills and judgment, not formulas.
- Learn motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland).
- Practice servant-leadership scenarios — "what should the PM do first?"
- Drill conflict-resolution questions (collaborate > compromise > force).
Domain 2: Process (50%)
The Process domain is the technical core of the exam. It spans both predictive and agile execution.
What It Covers
- Scope, schedule, and budget management
- Risk identification, analysis, and response
- Quality planning, assurance, and control
- Procurement and contract management
- Communications management
- Change control (integrated change control is critical)
- Resource management and leveling
- Project integration and closure
How to Study It
- Learn the key formulas: EVM (CV, SV, CPI, SPI, EAC, ETC), critical path, PERT.
- Understand contract types (fixed-price, cost-reimbursable, T&M) and when to use each.
- Practice scheduling scenarios — network diagrams, float, critical path.
- Drill risk response strategies (avoid, mitigate, transfer, accept, escalate).
Domain 3: Business Environment (8%)
The smallest domain, but it's real — 8% can swing a pass/fail. Don't skip it.
What It Covers
- Compliance and regulatory requirements
- Value delivery and benefit realization
- Organizational change management
- Business strategy alignment
- Business agility
How to Study It
- Understand how projects align with organizational strategy.
- Learn value delivery frameworks — outcome over output.
- Study change management (Kotter, ADKAR) at a high level.
- Know compliance basics — privacy, industry regulations, ethics.
Agile Across All Domains
Agile isn't a separate domain — it's woven throughout. Roughly half of all questions cover agile or hybrid approaches. You need fluency in:
- Scrum (roles, events, artifacts)
- Kanban (flow, WIP limits, cycle time)
- Servant leadership in agile
- Adaptive planning and iterative delivery
- Hybrid approaches (blending predictive and agile)
Domain Weight and Study Allocation
| Domain | Weight | Suggested Study Time |
|---|---|---|
| People | 42% | 35% |
| Process | 50% | 45% |
| Business Environment | 8% | 10% |
| Agile (woven) | ~50% | 20% of total |
Final Thoughts
Treat the three domains as legs of a stool — neglect one and your prep collapses. Track your accuracy by domain, and drill weak spots until your scores balance across all three. That balanced readiness is what passes the exam.
