PMP Exam Content Outline (ECO): The Blueprint You Must Study
If you study only one document before the PMP exam, make it the Exam Content Outline (ECO). Published by PMI, the ECO is the authoritative list of every task the exam tests. Everything in the PMBOK Guide, every training course, every mock question traces back to the ECO.
What Is the ECO?
The ECO breaks the PMP exam into three domains, each containing tasks and enablers (specific skills or knowledge points). It tells you exactly what the exam measures — and, by implication, what it doesn't.
Domain 1: People (42%)
The People domain is the largest section of the exam. It reflects PMI's shift toward leadership and team dynamics. Key task areas include:
- Managing conflict — sources, resolution techniques (collaborate, compromise, smooth, force, withdraw)
- Leading a team — setting vision, servant leadership, mentoring
- Supporting team performance — motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland), setting goals
- Empowering team members and stakeholders — delegation, authority
- Building team ground rules — team charter
- Negotiating — agreements, vendor terms
- Collaborating with virtual teams — communication tools, time zones
- Building shared ownership — accountability, collective responsibility
- Mentoring and training — coaching, knowledge transfer
- Stakeholder engagement — identifying, analyzing, managing expectations
- Removing impediments — servant leadership in action
Domain 2: Process (50%)
The Process domain covers the technical execution of projects — both predictive and agile. Key task areas:
- Executing project with urgency — critical path, schedule compression
- Managing communications — channels, methods, formats
- Assessing and managing risks — identification, qualitative/quantitative analysis, response strategies
- Engaging stakeholders — engagement assessment matrix
- Managing scope changes — change control, integrated change control
- Planning and managing budget and resources — estimating, EVM, resource leveling
- Planning and managing schedule — network diagrams, critical path, Gantt
- Planning and managing quality — quality planning, assurance, control
- Procurement — contract types, source selection, seller performance
- Integrating project planning — integration management
- Managing project work — execution, monitoring, controlling
- Closing projects — administrative and financial closure
Domain 3: Business Environment (8%)
The smallest domain, but don't skip it — 8% is enough to swing a pass/fail:
- Planning and managing compliance — regulations, standards
- Evaluating and delivering business value — value delivery, benefit realization
- Supporting organizational change — change management, adoption
- Evaluating business impact — business strategy alignment
How to Study the ECO
- Download it from PMI.org (it's free).
- Map each task to study material — don't skip any.
- Practice scenarios for each task area — the exam tests application, not recall.
- Track weak areas — if you score low on, say, risk management, drill it.
The ECO vs. the PMBOK Guide
The PMBOK Guide is a reference, not the exam blueprint. The ECO defines what the exam tests. Some ECO tasks appear in the PMBOK; others come from agile sources or general management theory. Use the PMBOK to fill knowledge gaps, but study the ECO as your map.
Final Thoughts
The ECO is your study north star. Every hour you invest should trace back to a task in the outline. When you can confidently say "I understand every task in the ECO," you're ready for the exam.
